How Can I Hide My Dash Cam?

The information provided in this article will help you to understand the basic requirements on installation and also answer the question of how I can hide my dash cam to conceal it as best as possible from potential theft?

Installing a dashboard camera inside a car has many advantages.

One of the most critical being able to provide independent evidence to an insurer in the event of a road traffic accident.

The dash cam is one of the latest in-car technologies that give you peace of mind when driving.

But while buying a dashcam for your car is the relatively easy part, you must also know how to install it.

Getting Started With Basic Installation of a Dash Cam

It is relatively easy to install a dashcam in the car to get started. It’s just a simple matter of sticking the suction cup to the windscreen or attaching the camera to the rear view mirror. Then connect the power lead to the cigarette lighter socket

Insert a suitable high endurance micro SD card and the camera is ready to go. Of course dual channel dash cams will have a rear camera to position in addition to the front facing camera.

A More Stealthy Installation

The basic installation mentioned above isn’t ideal as you’’l have the power lead loosely trailing from the dash cam to the power socket. As a temporary solution this is fine to get up and running with your new camera.

But what if I want to install the dashcam a bit more carefully and professionally to make it look more elegant and stealthy?

Hiding the power lead

You can do this by hiding the power lead. This is done by tucking the lead behind the rubber seal of the windscreen as well as underneath the dashboard of your car.

It’s better to hide the power cable of your dashcam on the passenger seat side as it will stop any tangles with the steering column wiring loom on the drivers side.

While hiding a dashcam in your car there are a few considerations.

While installing the dashcam in your car you should place it in an appropriate position inside the car so that you can operate the menu screen with ease.

In most cases the power lead will not be long enough to route around the back of the footwell. A simple trick is to run the cable directly on the underside of the dashboards edge closest to the car seat.

Adhesive Cable Clips

In doing this the cable will be out of view. To attach the cable to the dash I use small adhesive 3M cable clips which you can pick up in most hardware stores for a few bucks.

Make sure the clips are 3M adhesive as lesser quality clips tend to fail after a few months especially in hot weather.

Centre Console

You should now have the power cable next to the centre console. In most cases you will have to gently pull away the side fascia of the console. The fascia is only held by plastic clips so it’s not too difficult to remove and also clip back into place.

With the centre console fascia removed. Plug the cable into the cigarette lighter socket and measure how much excess cable needs to be hidden inside the console.

This can be done by eye as it’s fairly easy to estimate how much cable trailing from the lighter socket is enough for a snug fit.

Roundup

That’s pretty much it in regards to hiding a dash cam inside your car or vehicle. If the camera doesn’t have parking mode and you’re worried about the camera being stolen whilst the car is unattended.

It may be worth removing the camera from the suction mount or rear mirror by unplugging the power cable and storing the camera inside the glove compartment.

It’s just a matter of replacing the camera and plugging back into the power lead and your good to go again while driving. I hope you found this short guide useful. Check out the video below which covers the process of hiding the cables from view.
